Together with Los Angeles County Public Works, we are monitoring the efficiency of Low Impact Developments/Sustainable Urban Drainage systems for groundwater recharge. We are using borehole ERT to monitor to subsurface flow paths
The animation shows the results of a controlled infiltration experiment, where water occupies hydraulically conductive layers.
To optimize water recharge efficiency, we monitored dedicated recharge ponds using a grid of surface electrodes. The animation shows the imaged changes in resistivity, that correspond to water infiltration into the deeper subsurface. Recharge is limited in the upper part of the pond, where fines had accumulated at the surface.
The hydrogeophysical characterization of this site is published here. The project is described in detail here.
